Here is a rather humorous allusion to Frankenstein. In this video (from the popular television show Adventure Time), the character Lemongrab expresses feelings almost identical to those of the monster. He, too, was an experiment gone wrong. He expresses his feelings of aloneness, his frustration with being misunderstood, and his resentment towards his creator for making him that way. In later episodes, Lemongrab becomes much more destructive as a result of his misery (he even murders someone), just like the monster.

  1. I think that this is definitely a comical way to look at the story of Frankenstein. It seems almost impossible to get away from pop culture references which allude to Shelly’s famous work. I think it is extremely interesting when shows which are normally relatively juvenile explore more complex and mature themes. This makes the story of Frankenstein more relatable and understandable to a broader audience since Shelly can sometimes be a bit dense. I think it is great that as the monster states, “I am alone, and miserable,” (Shelly 101) the character in the show says this exact quote. It seems that whenever scientists tamper with nature too much, they encroach upon the rights of their creation.

  2. Also, I think it is important to consider how we may find media like this funny and view it for the sake of being entertained, yet the issues involved are, on the contrary, very grave. Does our laughter at Lemongrab and his situation reflect our acceptance of the exploitation of others, as long as they are as "strange" as Lemongrab? Or is it just funny because the other elements of the television show are so outlandish? I have often wondered this, especially in relation to other forms of entertainment...isn't it dangerous to take lightly such a serious issue, since, over time, that will lead us to subconsciously accept it as being "not a big deal"?
