Melrose Human Rights Commission

Melrose, Massachusetts (a suburb of Boston; it is considered a city because of its larger population, though it is still very small for a city) has its own human rights organization: the Melrose Human Rights Commission. This organization focuses on resolving issues of racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination experienced by Melrose citizens. It was founded in 1992 in response to an incident that occurred three years earlier in which a Melrose family's home was vandalized with racial slurs.

  1. One thing that surprised me about this Commission is that its website did not mention anything about protection against discrimination based on gender, sexuality, or disabilities. However, it does work with the Melrose Alliance Against Violence (works to eliminate violence, including domestic and dating violence, through education and raising awareness of issues) and the Melrose Gay-Straight Alliance (although on their website they did not talk much about their work with this particular organization, and this organization is primarily run by Melrose High School staff and students as a school organization). Apparently the Commission also works with Melrose High School, making it even more surprising that it does not include these other groups on its website and even in its work.
